Training on the decision-making tool using risk and protective factors for practitioners who work in child protection professions

Making evidence-informed decisions when working with people with a sexual interest in children or with sexual convictions is challenging. While there are established Actuarial and Structured Professional Judgement risk tools, they often depend on complete and accurate information.

However, many frontline child protection professionals face challenges in assessing risk due to limited information and a lack of clear guidance. This is particularly true when dealing with individuals who have allegations or cautions related to sexual offences. These professionals often struggle to identify key risk factors and develop effective risk management strategies.

The 2PS Delphi survey found that 74% of participants believe child protection practitioners lack adequate training for evidence-based decisions.

There is a gap within frontline child protection practice for a risk protocol that assists practitioners in making evidence-informed decisions. However, there is a recognition of the importance of ‘structured professional decision-making’ that assists defensible decisions (Barlow et al, 2012; McGibbon, 2019).

About the Knowledge Transfer Workshop

Participants will train on identifying risk and protective factors in individuals with sexual offence convictions or allegations.

Participants will be introduced to the Risk and Desistance Hexagon, a new tool for evidence-based decision-making.

This innovative tool is designed to assist frontline professionals in making more robust, evidence-based decisions when working with individuals with sexual interest in children.

Participants will practice using the tool and consider its utility in professional practice.
